Jumper's Knee - What is it and how do I get rid of it?


Have you noticed a pain at the front of your knee just below the knee cap? Then read on!

Jumpers knee, also know as Patellofemoral pain syndrome is a painful reaction to overuse of the patellar tendon, possibly caused during an injury. The patellar tendon joins the bottom of the kneecap (or patella) to the shin bone. The pain comes from an inflammation of the area, causing discomfort.

What are the symptoms?

Patellofemoral pain syndrome usually causes a dull, aching pain in the front of your knee.

This pain can be aggravated when you:

  • Walk up or down stairs

  • Kneel or squat

  • Sit with a bent knee for long periods of time

  • It might feel hot

  • Swollen

  • Red

This could be caused by a number of things, it could be from muscle overuse; running, jumping, skiing, cycling. Or it could be due to a muscular imbalance.

What is the treatment?

It’s important to decrease the inflammation, REST and RICE protocol is always a good place to start. Try to do 20 minutes cycles of ice 3-4 times a day. Deep tissue massage for the Quadriceps, strengthening exercises for the quadriceps to improve muscular imbalance.
