"Do you use A.R.T at your clinic?"

May 16, 2017

......... "Yes, we do!"

We often get asked if we use certain methods or whether we treat certain ailments at the clinic - 9/10, the answer is yes! If it isn't something we treat here, we can always point you in the right direction to someone who can help you - we will never leave any questions unanswered.

We were asked recently about A.R.T. - but what is A.R.T?

A.R.T (Active Release Technique) is a technique which treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Our muscles are made up from tiny filaments which are bundled up together. These filaments tear when a muscle is injured which then causes a physical and chemical change in the body. The injured area is then filled with a lesser quality muscle, known to you and I as 'scar tissue' or a fibrous adhesion. A.R.T is applied to the soft tissues in the body to relieve pain symptoms and discomfort. Once scar tissue is present in muscles it can restrict movement, blood flow and nerve conduction - the purpose of the technique is to rid the body of any scar tissue.

Common conditions A.R.T is effective for include:

  • headaches

  • back pain

  • carpal tunnel syndrome

  • shin splints

  • shoulder pain

  • sciatica

  • plantar fasciitis

  • knee and elbow issues

These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.

Overused muscles produce scar tissue, it's this scar tissue that restricts the movement of an otherwise freely moveable muscle, as the scar tissue builds the muscles can become shorter, tighter and weaker.

We use ART as an instrumental technique at Bodyworx Health Clinic, so if you are suffering from what you think is an overuse injury, give us a call we can see what we can do to help!
