Kinesiology Tape – The Facts

In celebration of us being recognised and followed by the famous RockTape UK brand on Instagram, I thought I would take some time to explain a little more about this miracle tape everyone is talking about!

RockTape UK are one of the UK’s leading Kinesiotape brands. The tape that we use at the clinic is RockTape. This tape is a thin, elastic therapeutic tape which can relieve pain, reduce swelling and inflammation and also provide support to joints and muscles. It is also known for its way of enhancing athletic performance, such as running and golf.

But how does it work? I hear you ask.

As described on the RockTape website itself:

‘RockTape microscopically lifts the skin away from the muscle and fascia, which decompresses the area which reduces swelling. RockTape also signals the central nervous system through the skin's nerves, which provides powerful feedback to minimize pain and cue form.’

It goes on to explain that this magical tape can interfere with the pain signals sent to the brain when you hurt yourself. They give the example of when you bump your shin you instantly rub the area to relieve the pain – Kinesiotape does the same thing! When the signals arriving at the brain are altered the brain does not produce the sensation of pain. We use the tape a lot of the clinic and have even heard that the tape has instantly taken away acute pain! Almost like it is turning down the volume on the pain that your body hears. It treats sprains or strains, bruising, tendinitis, back and neck pain, tennis elbow, arthritis and muscle weakness. It is also relieves some of the weight of a growing baby bump during pregnancy!

There are many benefits to using this tape, when applied by a professional, some of which are:-

  • Pain relief

  • Prevents and/or relieves muscle spasms and cramping

  • Accelerates recovery from bruising

  • Helps muscles recover quicker

  • Allows athletes to remain active whilst injured

The tape is made up from cotton with some added lycra for stretchability! It is drug and latex free with a hypoallergenic acrylic adhesive.

You can buy tape on the high street but to really benefit from it, it needs to be applied by a trained professional to ensure the best quality tape is used and that it is placed in the correct place for maximum affect.
